The need for higher spindle speeds on a CNC mill lead to the development of what were first know as "spindle speeders". Today these units have evolved into much faster, and higher precision spindles with built-in electric and air motors. They provide a great added capacity to any VMC for doing the special applications of a job requiring higher spindle speeds such as intricate mold cavity work, engraving, or finish pass milling for super fine finishes. There is no real need for a dedicated high-speed machining center for most applications. The standard spindle on a VMC can handle most of the jobs at slower speeds with higher torque. And, the simple installation of these air or electric spindle systems adds the capacity for doing the higher speed applications without resetting the job on another machine. A tremendous time saver.
