The Leading Edge AD98 Diamond End Mills
Diamond Coated Carbide End Mills
The Leading Edge diamond coated end mills offer a truly advanced technology for the machining of graphite, green ceramics and a variety of non-ferrous metals. Polycrystalline diamond end mills provide the ultimate in stock removal and wear resistance. The D² Diamond Dense (CVD) coated cutters offer extended wear resistance and cutter life. The AD98 (PVD) diamond coating provides extended carbide cutter life at a very economical price.
PCD – Polycrystalline Diamond
PCD is a natural or man-made diamond sintered together with cobalt, manufactured as a flat wafer and brazed onto a carbide insert or cutting tool. This form of diamond cutter has excellent abrasion resistance for both high-speed finishing and roughing of graphite electrodes. The PCD diamond cutters offer the thickest layer diamond available. This thickness combined with the sharply ground cutting edges give these PCD cutters the best of the CVD as well as the PVD diamond coatings. Another major advantage of the PCD cutters are their ability to be resharpened as an indexable insert, saving considerable costs. The Leading Edge provides an off-the-shelf exchange for worn PCD cutters.
D² – Diamond Dense
CVD – Chemical Vapor Deposition
Diamond Dense Cutters have a CVD coating which is grown directly onto the carbide end mill. This produces a diamond coating with the highest degree of hardness and lowest coefficient of friction. The result is an end product with the longest life available for machining graphite.
The low coefficient-of-friction property allows for maximum machining speeds, higher feed rates and less machining time in the manufacturing of graphite electrodes. The D² coating is 10-13 times thicker than the amorphous diamond coating (AD98). This coating can outlast other diamond coatings 5 to 10 times in some applications.
AD-98 – Amorphous Diamond Coating
PVD – Physical Vapor Deposition
AD-98 is a PVD amorphous diamond coating, the primary characteristic of which is its increased lubricity and abrasion resistance. These qualities add many hours to the cutting time achieved when machining non-ferrous materials as compared with uncoated carbide. The AD98 coating is significantly less expensive than the CVD coating which translates into a lower tooling cost for many applications.
AD-98 is micro thick diamond film coating that does not change the carbide end mill size, shape or tolerance. It is the added advantage of a “no-build-up-edge,” which provides a sharp cutting edge resulting in improved surface finishes on graphite electrodes and other non-ferrous materials.
The Leading Edge offers a tremendous stock of specialty diamond coated carbide end mills in a myriad of diameters, flute lengths, and over-all lengths specifically suited to special needs of the mold & die industry.
